Basic Set Up F2

F2 Laser Engraver Setup Tutorial

Whether you’re engraving delicate pendants or batch-processing custom metal business cards, the xTool F2 is a game-changer.

But first, let’s get you out of the box and ready to create! Here is your comprehensive guide to setting up your new machine.

F2 Unboxing

Step 1: Unboxing & Hardware Essentials 🛠

Before you dive into the software, let’s make sure the physical unit is ready for action.

  1. Clear the Space: Place your F2 on a stable, flat surface.
  2. Remove the Protective Tape: xTool packs their machines securely. Be sure to remove all the clear and yellow shipping tape from the exterior of the unit.
  3. Reveal the Interior: Lift the orange protective cover. You’ll find a foam insert containing your accessories (baseplate, test materials, and lens cover).
  4. Remove the Lens Cover: Crucial Step! Many new users think their laser isn’t working because they forgot to remove the black lens cap from the bottom of the laser module.

F2 Power Connecting

Step 2: Power and Connectivity 🔌

he F2 offers several ways to connect, but starting with a wired connection is recommended for your first project.

  • Power Up: Connect the power brick to the machine and plug it into your outlet.
  • The Safety Key: Ensure the physical safety key is inserted into the back of the unit. Without this, the machine will not operate.
  • Computer Connection: Plug the USB-C cable into the back of the F2 and connect the USB-A end to your laptop (use a dongle if you’re on a newer MacBook).
  • The “Secret” Switch: If your machine doesn’t seem to turn on, check the Big Red Emergency Stop Button on the side. If it’s pressed in, the machine is off. Rotate it clockwise until it pops out to engage the power.

Step 3: Alignment & Focus 🔍

For high-end jewelry, alignment is everything. The F2 makes this easy with two methods:

Manual Focus

On the top/side of the unit, you’ll find a dial. When you place an object on the baseplate, you will see two laser dots (one red, one blue). Turn the dial until the two dots overlap perfectly into one. This ensures the laser is at the optimal height for your material.

Auto-Focus

In the xTool Studio software, you can also select “Auto-focus” to let the machine do the heavy lifting for you! The exhaust fan is at the back. This allows the air to be sucked out efficiently without being blocked.

Step 4: Software & Calibration 💻

Download xTool Studio: Install xTool Studio on your computer.

Connect Your Device: Open the software, click “New Project,” and select the “Connect Device” icon.

💡 Tip: If the machine doesn’t show up, try restarting XCS before turning on the engraver.

Initial Calibration: Upon first connection, the software will guide you through a calibration process. You’ll use a piece of black scratch paper to align the infrared and blue light lasers. Simply follow the on-screen prompts to “Engrave” and then “Align.”

You’re ready to go

Once calibrated, you’re ready to go. Let’s start the Tutorial with a business card.

Step 1: Select Material 👀

In xTool Studio, choose your mode (e.g., Flat Surface) and specific material (e.g., Stainless Steel or Black Metal Card).

💡 Tip: Press the Camera icon to preview your design on the material! The F2 features a built-in camera. Click the Camera icon in the software to see exactly where your design sits on your jewelry piece- no more guessing!

Step 2: Engrave ⚡

Close the orange shield, hit “Process” in the software, and press the physical button on the side of the machine. Don’t forget to turn on the fan!

💡 Pro-Blog Tips for Jewelry

For batch processing (like engraving 20 logo tags at once), use the included L-shaped positioning jig. This allows you to place your pieces in the exact same spot every time, ensuring consistency for your brand.
