3D GF charms cannot be submerged in water. (EX: Shower, swimming etc.)
To create a 3D GF charm, 2 sides must be soldered together. (GF cannot be casted) To avoid cracking and to allow heat/steam to escape during the soldering process, small pin holes are left along the solder. This can also cause premature darkening of the metal by the solder, however it can be buffed brighter.
When a GF piece is soldered, the resulting color is a greyish toned gold. The color changes from the extreme heat.
To create a uniform color, the GF piece is flash plated with another layer of 14kt gold. (Almost all GF parts go through this flash plate)
If dampness becomes trapped in the 3D charm (via pin holes), condensation will collect on the surface and cause the gold plating to wear quickly, resulting in the heat discoloured gold filled underneath the flash plated layer, to be exposed.
