In this video, I show how to reduce the size of jump rings for permanent bracelet welding. However, the same principles apply for general silversmithing and beading, and from any size of jump ring to something smaller.
This is a useful trick to remember because you may want very small jump rings which are not carried by most supply stores, or you may be squeezed for time and you only have larger jump rings available.
I find the best way to do this is to pivot the jump ring open and then curl the ring smaller. In this way, you will retain the curvature of the ring, and see the finished size it will be, before cutting it.
It is important to use flush cutters to achieve a flat (flush) edge, to give the ring the maximum amount of wire surface for a more secure closure.
Then use pliers to bring the cut edges closer. If the ring is so small that you cannot grip each side, simply use pliers to pinch from the outside. You will not achieve perfect roundness, but this can be remedied afterwards.
If the welded ring is not perfectly round, you can ream the inside a little, and round off the outside by pressing inward with pliers.
