Engraving HACK: How to Make a Precision Holder Jig for Your Laser

Engraving Earrings

🔥 Make a Stud Earring Engraving Jig in an Inexpensive Way!

Creating a custom holder for laser-engraving stud earrings is a simple, cost-effective way to achieve professional results with high precision. This DIY jig ensures that your earring blanks remain flat and secure, which is essential for consistent batch production

Materials Needed

Materials Needed ✏️

To build this precision jig, you will need a few basic supplies:

  • Drill Press: A standard, inexpensive drill press is recommended to ensure you are drilling perfectly straight holes.
  • Wood Block: A piece of leftover wood trim (approximately 1.5” x ¾”). Ensure it has at least one 90° corner to help align it against your laser’s placeholder jig.
  • Drill Bit: A 1.1 mm bit is ideal, as most earring studs are between 0.9 mm and 1 mm thick

Choosing the right drill bit

Step 1: Choosing the right drill bit (1.1mm for 1mm posts) 📏

The foundation of a precision jig is choosing a bit that accommodates standard jewelry posts without being too loose.

  • The Size: Use a 1.1 mm drill bit.
  • The Fit: Since most earring studs are between 0.9 mm and 1 mm thick, a 1.1 mm hole provides enough clearance to insert the posts easily while keeping them secure enough to remain level.
  • The Setup: When inserting the bit into your drill press, ensure it is perfectly straight. If the bit is misaligned, it will “spin” or wobble, resulting in uneven holes that will ruin the precision of your engraving.

Measuring & Marking Your Layout

Step 2: Measuring & Marking Your Layout ✔️

Drawing a clear layout on your wood block is what allows for successful batch runs and repeats.

  • Leveling Lines: Draft a straight horizontal line across the bottom and top of the block. This acts as a “level” to ensure that even square or uniquely shaped earrings are perfectly aligned.
  • Center Guides: Draw vertical center lines at each drilling point. These serve as visual markers to help you double-check the center of your design through the laser’s eye.
  • Spacing: While 5mm studs are common, you should space your marks out if you plan to engrave larger earring blanks in the future.

Drilling the precision post holes

Step 3: Drilling the precision post holes ⚫

Once your layout is marked, use your drill press to create the actual holder.

  • Straight Entry: Using an inexpensive drill press is highly recommended over a hand drill because it ensures the holes are perfectly vertical.
  • Testing the Depth: Drill deep enough to house the post so the earring sits flush and flat against the wood.
  • The Advantage: Unlike using putty or gummy substances—which can lead to inconsistent surfaces- these drilled holes ensure the face of the jewelry is level for the laser, which is critical for engraving names or small details with high precision.

Test and Align

Step 4: Test and Align 🛠️

Place your earring blanks into the holes. The jig will hold them securely for engraving names, dates, or small designs. If you find you need more precision, you can learn to frame the outline of each earring blank in your laser software to ensure perfect centring.

Why Use a Jig Instead of Putty?

Why Use a Jig Instead of Putty? ⚪

Many designers suggest using gummy substances or putty to hold earrings in place, but these methods are often inconsistent. Using a solid wood jig provides two major advantages:

  1. Level Surfaces: It ensures the face of the earring is perfectly flat.
  2. Repeatability: It allows for “repeats and batch runs” where every pair of earrings is engraved in the exact same position.

straight 90° corner.

💡Pro Tips!

To make this jig even more efficient, use a wood block with a straight 90° corner. By pushing this corner against your laser’s placeholder jig, you can remove and replace the holder in the exact same spot every time, allowing you to run multiple batches without needing to re-calibrate your software.

For high-quality results, use sterling silver or gold-filled engraving blanks. Having a variety of shapes- like rounds or squares- allows you to offer popular personalized items, such as children’s or pets’ names
